The Empress and El Diablo

more info

When forced to move back in with his parents, Eddie seeks the guidance of a fortune teller whose mysterious and shocking counsel isn't quite what he was expecting.  The Empress and El Diablo follows Eddie Roberts, through dreams and reality, as he valiantly struggles with his horrifying destiny, his overbearing family, and a girlfriend who's too tired to fool around.  Inspired by the writings of C.G. Jung and the Tarot of Marseilles, this production marks Toy Box Theatre Company's tenth season. The Empress and El Diablo will be performed with a live garage rock score by Colonna Sonora.

Toy Box kicks off its 9th season with the premiere of their original adaptation of Woyzeck, Georg Büchner's unfinished working-class tragedy. Colonna Sonora, 2010 NYITA nominee for best original music, will provide a live acoustic score, and members of the critically acclaimed production team of Toy Box's 2009 'Tis Pity She's a Whore return to bring this multidisciplinary work to life.

Toy Box's adaptation is set in a small Midwestern town in the midst of winter and at the depths of the current recession. Woyzeck scrounges for work, battles with paranoia, drinks his breakfast, and struggles to provide the bare essentials for his family. Ultimately, Woyzeck watches his dignity and sanity slip away as he wrestles with the painful realities of life.

"The Toy Box Theatre Company's Woyzeck is strong theater, a contemporary take on a bold classic that respects the original while spinning it in all the right ways for today's audience."
--TheatreScene

"A stellar adaptation of the classic tragedy with extra performance elements and a wonderful ensemble cast.  This Woyzeck doesn't miss a beat."
--Theater Is Easy

"The cast and the musicians... bring a sincerity to their performances that elevate the production, conveying an honest portrayal of human frailty."
--Theater Online

"In addition to a fine cast and atmospheric live music, the production boasts superb technical talent, along with evocative movement direction..."
--Blog Critics

"David Michael Holmes truly pours himself into the role of Woyzeck.  From one sweaty, crazed scene to the next, Holmes' performance is enthralling throughout."
--shortandsweetnyc.com

"I'm not generally a big fan of reimagining famous plays, but when such explorations succeed, they can make for worthwhile theatre.  This is certainly the case with Toy Box Theatre Company's Woyzeck."
--Martin Denton, nytheatre.com
